Former Majority Leader of the House of Representatives, Tom DeLay, who few years ago was one of the most powerful and feared Republicans in Congress, was sentenced Wednesday of money laundering.
DeLay tried to funnel money from corporations to Texas candidates in 2002.
The jury deliberated for 19 hours before returning with the verdict of guilty to charges of conspiracy and money laundering.
DeLay could face a life sentence on charges of money laundering.
Dick DeGuerin one of DeLay lawyers said an appeal is on the way. DeLay continues to claim that he is innocent, he had this to say about the verdict: “This is an abuse of power. It’s a miscarriage of justice, and I still maintain that I am innocent. The criminalization of politics undermines our very system and I’m very disappointed in the outcome.”
