Jaxon Smith-Njigba Just Torched Arizona for Three Touchdowns

Seattle entered Arizona without its usual starting quarterback and left with a reminder that the easiest offensive solution can sometimes be very simple: keep throwing the ball to Jaxon Smith-Njigba.

Smith-Njigba caught nine passes for 155 yards and three touchdowns as the Seahawks beat the Cardinals 31–7, pushing Seattle to 2–0. Reuters reported that Drew Lock, starting in place of injured Sam Darnold, completed 19 of 26 passes for 235 yards.

Three of those completions changed the entire game.

Smith-Njigba turned a close game into a blowout

Arizona was still tied 7–7 at halftime. Then Seattle’s best receiver started pulling the game away.

Smith-Njigba’s biggest play was an 82-yard touchdown, the longest scoring reception of his career. It gave Seattle the kind of explosive play that forces a defense to reconsider everything else it wants to do. By the time the Seahawks finished the second half, the Cardinals had no answer for the connection between Lock and Smith-Njigba.

The performance also showed why elite receivers can stabilize an offense when the quarterback situation changes. Lock did not need to reinvent Seattle’s identity. He needed to make the right reads, protect the football and give his best playmaker opportunities.

Seattle’s defense made the margin even uglier

The offensive headline belongs to Smith-Njigba, but the Seahawks defense made sure Arizona had almost no path back into the game. The Cardinals were held to just 151 total yards, an extraordinary number in a league designed to create offense.

That combination is what should concern the rest of the NFC West. Seattle did not simply survive a week without Darnold. It won by 24 points while controlling both sides of the ball.

When a backup quarterback can step in and the team still looks structurally sound, it usually means the surrounding roster is doing a lot right.

The star status is no longer theoretical

Smith-Njigba entered the season with expectations that already placed him among the league’s most important receivers. A three-touchdown afternoon does not create that reputation by itself, but it gives the conversation another obvious piece of evidence.

Teams can scheme against a receiver. They can roll coverage, change leverage and force the quarterback to look elsewhere. The best players still find moments when the matchup breaks.

Arizona found that out repeatedly.

Seattle will eventually get Darnold back. When it does, the most important takeaway from this game may be that the offense did not need him to be perfect to look dangerous. Smith-Njigba can change a game fast enough to make everything around him easier.
