Flag football is moving out of the side-event category.

The NFL and TMRW Sports are creating a new annual Pro Flag Showcase that will debut during Super Bowl LXI week in Los Angeles. The event will feature top players from the professional flag football league the two organizations are developing together, with a custom-built venue and a live broadcast designed specifically around the sport.

The announcement matters because it connects three things that are happening at once: the NFL’s investment in flag football, the creation of a real professional pathway and the sport’s Olympic debut at the 2028 Los Angeles Games.

TMRW Sports said the showcase will open Super Bowl week and feature many of the world’s top players.

The NFL is using its biggest stage to introduce a different version of football

Super Bowl week is usually where the league celebrates the scale and mythology of tackle football. Putting elite flag athletes into that environment is a deliberate attempt to transfer some of that attention to a faster, lighter-contact format.

The presentation will be part of the experiment. TMRW says the broadcast will combine competition with storytelling and use technology and data to help viewers understand the strategy, movement and athleticism that make flag football different.

NFL Pro Bowlers, Hall of Famers and other legends are also expected to serve as advocates around the event.

The participation numbers explain why the league is pushing now

More than 20 million people play flag football worldwide, according to the NFL and TMRW. In the United States, about 4.1 million youth participate — an increase of more than 50 percent since 2020.

The sport is offered at the high-school level in 40 states. Participation among young women on high-school teams grew nearly 60 percent from 2024 to 2025, and more than 250 colleges and universities now have women’s flag-football programs.

The NCAA has already placed the sport in its Emerging Sports for Women program and recommended that all three divisions add a national collegiate championship as early as spring 2028.

The Olympics could be the inflection point

Los Angeles 2028 gives flag football something few emerging sports ever receive: a global event in a market where the NFL already has enormous cultural power.

The professional league is expected to launch before those Games. That means the Super Bowl showcase can operate as both a preview and a recruiting tool — a way to teach mainstream football fans the names, personalities and style of players they may see again on an Olympic stage.

The league’s investor pool also includes all 32 NFL club owners, alongside strategic investors and current and former players. That does not guarantee the professional product will work, but it shows this is not being treated like a temporary promotional stunt.

Flag football has spent years building from the youth level upward. The Super Bowl-week showcase is a sign that the top of the pyramid is finally being constructed too.
