Keenan Allen’s first season with Indianapolis now comes with a significant off-field question hanging over it.
The veteran Colts receiver has been formally charged with two misdemeanor counts stemming from an August 30 arrest in Indianapolis, and he could eventually face league discipline that includes a minimum three-game suspension. Reuters, citing ESPN and court records, reported that the case involves two alcohol-related driving charges.
The charges are allegations, and the legal process remains ongoing. The NFL is expected to wait for that process to develop before imposing discipline.
The league consequence could come later
According to the report, the NFL’s collective bargaining agreement calls for a minimum three-game suspension in circumstances covered by the league’s substance-abuse policy, though any actual discipline will depend on the case and league review.
That creates an unusual football timeline. Allen can remain available while the legal case proceeds, meaning Indianapolis has to prepare for the possibility of losing an important offensive player later rather than immediately.
His next listed court step is an attorney conference scheduled for October 26.
The Colts signed him only weeks ago
Indianapolis added Allen on August 18, bringing in one of the most productive receivers of his generation. He caught six passes for 32 yards in the season opener, giving the Colts a veteran target who has spent more than a decade winning with route detail and timing rather than relying only on raw speed.
That is why the uncertainty matters on the field. An offense can replace snaps. It is much harder to replace trust, especially when a receiver’s value comes from consistently being in the right place against coverage.
Allen entered the season with more than 1,000 career receptions and a résumé that includes six Pro Bowl selections. The Colts did not sign him as a developmental piece. They signed him to help immediately.
What Indianapolis has to manage now
The organization has two separate issues to handle. The first is the legal case, where Allen is entitled to due process and where the facts will be addressed through the court system. The second is football contingency planning.
If a suspension eventually arrives, the Colts will need other receivers to absorb targets and situational responsibilities. That planning can happen now even if the actual discipline comes much later.
For fans, the distinction is important too. A report about potential NFL discipline is not the same thing as a final legal judgment. Until the case is resolved and the league makes its own decision, both pieces remain unsettled.
What is clear is that a roster move Indianapolis made in August now carries a complication that could follow the team well into the season.
