Fashion brands love anniversaries because anniversaries give them permission to sell the past as the present. J.Crew’s new Barn Jacket campaign works because it does something smarter: it turns the people wearing the jacket into the argument for why the piece still matters.

For the Barn Jacket’s 40th anniversary, J.Crew photographed 160 people across New York, Los Angeles, Austin, Boston and Chicago. The cast jumps wildly across culture: Spike Lee, Chance the Rapper, Vince Staples, Scottie Pippen, Jenny Slate, Dave Franco, Amandla Stenberg, Bowen Yang, Aly Raisman and many more.

The portraits were shot by Robert Nethery, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The casting is the whole idea

A 40-year-old utility jacket can easily become costume. Put it on one carefully chosen model and the campaign risks feeling like nostalgia dressed up as relevance. Put it on 160 people with completely different identities, ages, careers and personal aesthetics, and the jacket starts to look less like a trend than a piece of infrastructure.

That is the message J.Crew is pushing. The company’s creative team describes the Barn Jacket as something that can read polished, rugged, feminine, oversized, familiar or unexpected depending on the person wearing it.

The campaign makes that visible. Scottie Pippen in the original-style 1986 version does not tell the same story as Dave Franco in wool. Aly Raisman in denim does not read the same way as a musician, filmmaker or downtown fashion personality in canvas or suede.

Heritage is having a better moment than hype

The timing also makes sense. Fashion has spent years chasing drops, limited collaborations and algorithmic novelty. At the same time, consumers have rediscovered pieces that feel durable, familiar and easy to wear repeatedly. A barn jacket does not need to explain itself in a 30-second campaign film. You know what it is the moment you see it.

J.Crew is leaning into that familiarity while tweaking the silhouette. The 2026 version hits closer to the waist for a boxier shape but keeps recognizable details such as corduroy accents, practical pockets and adjustable cuffs. The original classic fit also remains available.

This is less about one jacket than cultural permission

Celebrity casting in fashion usually works by aspiration: wear this because somebody famous wears it. This campaign is closer to social proof. The sheer range of people says the jacket can enter dozens of wardrobes without demanding that everyone dress the same way.

That is why Spike Lee, Chance the Rapper, Vince Staples and Scottie Pippen can all occupy the same campaign without it feeling like a random celebrity dump. The common denominator is not a shared aesthetic. It is the idea that the garment bends around whoever puts it on.

Forty years later, that may be the best case J.Crew could make for keeping the Barn Jacket alive.
