Jhené Aiko Finally Has Her First No. 1 Album

Jhené Aiko has spent more than a decade being one of R&B’s most recognizable voices without ever owning the top spot on the Billboard 200. That gap is finally closed.

Westside Whimsy debuted at No. 1 on the chart dated September 26, giving Aiko the first chart-topping album of her career. Complex, citing Billboard, reported that the 20-track project earned 74,000 equivalent album units in the United States during the tracking week ending September 17.

The milestone arrives nearly 13 years after Aiko first reached the Billboard 200 with Sail Out.

Streaming did almost all the heavy lifting

Of the 74,000 equivalent units, 70,000 came from streaming activity, representing 71.33 million official on-demand streams of the album’s songs. Album sales accounted for another 3,500 units, with 500 coming from track-equivalent units.

Those numbers make the debut an especially modern kind of No. 1. This was not a victory built primarily around physical bundles or a huge first-week retail event. People pressed play — a lot.

It also exceeded early projections that had placed the project closer to 62,000 units.

A long wait makes the milestone bigger

Aiko came close before. Her 2020 album Chilombo debuted at No. 2 and later received an Album of the Year Grammy nomination. She has had successful singles, high-profile collaborations and a catalog with enormous streaming life.

That makes the first No. 1 feel less like a sudden breakthrough and more like a delayed statistical confirmation of an audience that has been there for years.

Billboard also noted another piece of context: Aiko is the first female R&B artist to lead the Billboard 200 in 2026.

Westside Whimsy arrived fast

The album was released September 11, only days after its formal announcement. Its 20 tracks include Kendrick Lamar on “So Good,” Ab-Soul on “Love Bomb,” Tyga on “Like, Whatever,” Larry June on “Neighbors” and OHMA on the closing track “Golden Coast.”

The guest list reinforces the album’s West Coast identity without turning it into a compilation. Aiko remains the center of the record, and the project’s atmosphere connects naturally with the California imagery and culture that have long shaped her work.

The number changes the conversation

Chart positions are not a final judgment on quality, and plenty of important albums never reach No. 1. But career milestones have narrative power.

For years, the easy statistical description of Aiko’s catalog included the phrase “never had a No. 1 album.” That line is gone now.

Westside Whimsy does not create her audience. It reveals how large and durable that audience has become — and gives one of R&B’s longest-running stars a chart result that finally matches the scale of her cultural presence.
