Hollywood Showed Up for George Lucas — and the New Museum Looked Like a Movie Premiere

George Lucas built a career around worlds that felt larger than the screen. His new museum in Los Angeles finally has a world of its own.

The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art celebrated its opening with a star-heavy event in Exposition Park ahead of the museum’s public debut. Vogue’s opening-night coverage captured a crowd that included Harrison Ford, Steven Spielberg, Leonardo DiCaprio, Oprah Winfrey, Michael B. Jordan, Katy Perry and other major figures from entertainment and culture.

The guest list made the evening feel like a movie premiere, but the institution Lucas and Mellody Hobson have built is deliberately broader than Hollywood memorabilia.

A museum about how stories become images

The Lucas Museum is centered on narrative art: images that tell stories, shape shared memory or carry characters from one generation into another. Film belongs inside that definition, but so do illustration, painting, photography, comics, animation and popular visual culture.

That framing helps explain why Lucas has resisted treating the museum as simply a permanent Star Wars attraction. Visitors will certainly encounter famous objects connected to his films, but the collection also reaches across artists, eras and media that influenced how modern audiences understand storytelling.

The scale is substantial. The museum says the building spans roughly 300,000 square feet, with about 100,000 square feet of gallery space on a 13-acre campus. More than 1,300 works are included across the inaugural exhibitions.

The building is already part of the show

Before many visitors see a single artwork, the architecture will likely become the museum’s most photographed object. Designed by Ma Yansong and MAD Architects, the structure has the kind of curved, futuristic silhouette that immediately invites spaceship comparisons.

That was especially visible during opening-night festivities, where lighting, live performance and a rooftop drone show turned the campus itself into a visual production. It is difficult to imagine a more on-brand debut for a museum founded by the filmmaker behind some of the most recognizable visual worlds in modern popular culture.

Los Angeles gets another major cultural anchor

The location also matters. Exposition Park already contains major institutions and sports venues, and the Lucas Museum adds another destination to a part of Los Angeles where entertainment, education and civic culture overlap.

Lucas and Hobson have spent years getting the project to this point, navigating location changes, design questions and the long process of building an institution that can outlive its founders. The opening-night celebrity turnout was the glamorous final stretch of a much longer story.

Now comes the more important test: what the museum feels like when the red-carpet crowd is gone and ordinary visitors begin deciding which images deserve to become part of their own memory.

For one night, though, Hollywood showed up to celebrate one of its most influential storytellers — and the building looked ready for its close-up.
