Apple spent years letting Samsung, Google and other manufacturers define what a foldable phone was supposed to be.

Now it finally has an answer.

The company unveiled the iPhone Duo on September 9, its first foldable iPhone and one of the biggest physical changes to the product line in years. According to Apple’s announcement, the device opens to a 7.6-inch inner display and uses a 5.4-inch outer screen when closed.

The price is just as ambitious: the iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 in the United States.

Apple waited until it could make the fold feel like an iPhone feature

That delay is the real story.

Apple is rarely rewarded for being first. Its strategy has often been to enter a category after other companies have exposed the weak points, then sell a version designed to feel more integrated with the rest of its ecosystem.

The iPhone Duo follows that playbook. Apple says both displays use the same aspect ratio so content can scale more naturally as the phone moves between open and closed states. The inner display also uses a nano-texture finish intended to reduce glare, while a precision hinge is designed to make the folding action feel deliberate rather than experimental.

Opened, Apple says the Duo is the thinnest iPhone it has made.

Those details matter because the fold itself cannot be the whole pitch anymore. The category is mature enough that people want to know what the extra screen actually improves: multitasking, video, games, reading, photography and daily app use.

$1,999 makes this a statement device

The starting price puts the iPhone Duo in luxury-tech territory even by Apple standards.

It will be offered in 256GB, 512GB, 1TB and 2TB configurations, with preorders beginning October 16 in more than 70 countries and regions. Availability starts October 23 in the first wave of markets.

That means Apple is not positioning the Duo as the obvious next phone for every iPhone owner. At launch, it is more likely to appeal to early adopters, heavy Apple users and customers who want the newest form factor regardless of price.

That can still be strategically important. A premium foldable gives Apple a new ceiling for the iPhone line and a place to experiment with software behavior that could influence less expensive models later.

The bigger battle is software

Foldables have always faced the same problem: impressive hardware is easy to demonstrate, but the device has to keep proving itself after the first five minutes.

Apple says the Duo will ship with iOS 27.1 and a reworked experience built around the larger canvas. The company is also tying the product into Apple Intelligence and its broader ecosystem.

If apps simply stretch across a bigger screen, the Duo becomes an expensive novelty. If developers and Apple itself create useful ways to move between the outer and inner displays, it becomes a new kind of iPhone.

That is the standard Apple has created by waiting this long.

The company did not invent the foldable phone. It watched the category develop, studied the compromises and entered at the moment it believes it can make folding feel less like a trick and more like a normal part of using an iPhone.

Now the market gets to decide whether that confidence is worth $1,999.
